Subtext: A Life Between The Lines
Subtext is any content of a creative work which is not announced explicitly by the characters or author, but is implicit or becomes something understood by the observer of the work. Text is what is on the surface and Subtext lurks underneath in the form of interpretation or insight. It is sometimes called the Latent Text and is often Subtle.
I thought the word Subtext embodied my effort at understanding myself and those around me. As an English Student and, later, an English Teacher, my life has also been devoted to exploring what lies between the author’s words. I fancied myself an archaeologist of text, digging for context and meaning. So, when I decided to publish my diaries as a series, I named it Subtext: A Life Between The Lines.
